Photographers, video creators, and anyone cleaning a laptop or monitor can use the screen as a simple, even background or a clear surface to inspect. Before starting, set a comfortable display brightness; the page also lets you save a solid-color image in a chosen size and format.
How to use Black Screen
- Open the page to show the black color, or select another color under Quick colors. To choose a shade yourself, use Choose a custom color and the Color picker, or enter a value with HEX, RGB, or HSL.
- Select Fullscreen for a color-only view. Use Exit fullscreen to return.
- To clean the display, select Cleaning mode. Touches are ignored while it is active; press and hold for 2 seconds to exit. Wipe the screen gently, following your device maker’s cleaning guidance.
- For a saved background, choose an Image format (PNG, JPEG, or WEBP) and a Resolution, or select Custom dimensions and enter Width (px) and Height (px). Select Download image.
- Under Screen light, adjust Display brightness or Warmth. You can select a Sleep timer option, and use Ring light frame and Frame width if you want the frame around the display.
The Black Screen page also shows the current color value, such as #000000. Use Copy HEX to copy it, Share color to share it, or Reset to return to the default color.
When to use it
- Before a display return window closes: Look across the dark field for edge glow or uneven areas that might warrant a closer check.
- When cleaning a laptop or monitor: Cleaning mode helps avoid accidental touches while you wipe. A black surface can make dust easier to notice.
- When checking LCD backlight bleed: View the screen in a dim room and look for light leaking from the edges. For a more focused check, try the Backlight Bleed Test.
- When you suspect a pixel issue: A solid color can help you notice a pixel that looks different from its surroundings, but compare colors with the Dead Pixel Test for a more targeted check.
- On an OLED screen: Black pixels are switched off, so a black field can be useful when you want a dark display.
- During a presentation or at night: Show a dark screen without turning the device off, for example between slides or when you want less visible screen content.
- For a simple creative background: Download a solid black image for a photo, video, or design project, or choose another Quick colors preset for a different backdrop.
Tips for using Black Screen
For a fair visual check, look at the display from your usual viewing position and avoid judging it in bright, changing room light. If you see a suspected fault, compare with other colors or a dedicated screen test before deciding the panel is damaged.
Screen light is for the on-page appearance: Display brightness and Warmth do not change the color’s HEX value or the downloaded image. To save a particular shade, check the value shown on the page and use Copy HEX.
When exporting, choose a size that suits the intended use rather than automatically selecting the largest option. Custom dimensions allow 16–8192 pixels per side, up to 33,177,600 pixels total; 8K needs substantial memory and may fail on some devices. Images stay in your browser.
Limits of a black screen check
A black field can help you see visible dust, edge glow, or an obvious pixel difference, but it does not diagnose the cause or confirm that a monitor is working correctly. Display appearance also depends on the screen and its settings, and this tool does not professionally calibrate a display.
For persistent or serious image problems, use the manufacturer’s guidance or support rather than relying on a browser color screen. A solid-color image is also not a substitute for a complete display test; use a dedicated test when you need to check pixels, uniformity, or other screen behavior.
