This creates images, not physical monitor measurements. Unrotated integer geometry preserves crisp edges.

Small preview; full image generated only on Download. Up to 33,177,600 pixels (noise: 8,294,400). 8K is device-dependent. JPEG/WebP can alter pixel values.

Open browser tool

This tool is useful for designers, presenters, and anyone preparing a patterned backdrop or tile for a project. Decide the intended dimensions before exporting, and use the preview to check the overall composition; the full-resolution image is created when you download it.

How to use Checkerboard Background Generator

  1. Choose an Output resolution preset, such as 1920x1080, 1080x1080, or 1080x1920. For other dimensions, choose Custom and enter Output width (pixels) and Output height (pixels).
  2. Set Primary color and Secondary / text color to choose the two colors for your checkerboard.
  3. Adjust Pattern size (output pixels), Spacing (pixels), Stroke (pixels), Rotation (degrees), and Pattern offset (pixels) to shape and position the pattern. The Checkerboard Background Generator is designed for adjusting these details before export.
  4. Choose PNG, JPG, or WEBP under Image format. Then select Download image to create and save the full-size file.
  5. For a larger on-screen view, select Fullscreen. Use Escape or Exit fullscreen to leave fullscreen; Hide controls hides the controls. The F shortcut toggles fullscreen, and R resets the settings.

When to use it

  • Making a website or presentation background: Set the output dimensions to match the space where you plan to use the image.
  • Creating a square social graphic: Pick the 1080x1080 preset and adjust the colors and pattern size to fit your design.
  • Preparing a portrait wallpaper: Start with the 1080x1920 preset rather than cropping a landscape image afterward.
  • Building a repeating visual tile: Use the square-size and spacing controls to create a pattern that suits the layout.
  • Checking a color combination: Preview contrasting or closely related primary and secondary colors before downloading.
  • Making a large display background: Choose a higher output resolution when the image needs to cover a large screen, keeping device limits in mind.
  • Making a rotated or offset pattern: Change Rotation and Pattern offset to vary the checkerboard's alignment for a composition.

Tips for a cleaner checkerboard

Use integer pattern geometry without rotation when crisp edges are important. A small preview is useful for judging the overall arrangement, but inspect the downloaded image at its intended display size if fine details matter. The Checkerboard Background Generator creates the image on your device; select Download image when you are ready for the full output.

SettingWhat it changes
Pattern size (output pixels)Sets the size of the checkerboard pattern.
Spacing (pixels) and Stroke (pixels)Adjust the pattern's spacing and stroke dimensions.
Rotation (degrees) and Pattern offset (pixels)Adjust the pattern's angle and position.
Image formatChoose PNG, JPG, or WEBP for the downloaded image.

Limits to keep in mind

This creates an image, not a physical monitor measurement or screen test. The maximum output is 33,177,600 pixels, and 8K output can depend on your device. Large exports may be demanding, so use a smaller resolution if an export is slow or does not complete. JPG and WEBP can alter pixel values; choose PNG when preserving exact color values is important. For measuring or diagnosing a display, use a dedicated screen test rather than relying on a checkerboard image.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make a checkerboard background?

Choose an output resolution, set the primary and secondary colors, then adjust the pattern size, spacing, stroke, rotation, and offset. Select Download image to create the full-size file.

Which image formats can I download?

Choose PNG, JPG, or WEBP under Image format. JPG and WEBP can alter pixel values, while PNG is a better choice when exact color values matter.

Can I choose a custom image size?

Yes. Choose Custom for Output resolution and enter the Output width (pixels) and Output height (pixels), within the tool's pixel limit.

Why does the pattern look less crisp after rotation?

Unrotated integer geometry preserves crisp edges. Rotation can change how pattern edges align in the exported image.

Is my checkerboard image uploaded?

No. The image is generated locally in your browser and downloaded through your browser.

Why is my large image export slow or failing?

Large images can require substantial device resources, and 8K output is device-dependent. Try a smaller output resolution if the download is slow or does not complete.
