Designers, students, and anyone making a screen background can use the controls to shape a gradient before exporting it. The image is generated locally in your browser, so you can create a file without uploading your color choices elsewhere.
How to use Gradient Background Generator
- Choose a Background fill: solid, linear, or radial. Set the Primary color, then add or remove Gradient stops to build the blend you want.
- For a linear gradient, adjust Gradient angle (degrees). Use Random seed and Gradient preset (Sea or Dusk), then select Generate from seed to create a seeded variation. Equal-position stops form hard edges by design.
- Choose an Output resolution preset, such as 1920x1080, 1080x1080, or 1080x1920. Select Custom to enter Output width (pixels) and Output height (pixels) yourself.
- Select PNG, JPG, or WEBP under Image format. The preview is small; select Download image to generate and download the full-size file.
- Select Copy base gradient CSS if you need the CSS for the base gradient. Use Fullscreen to expand the scene, Hide controls to clear the controls from view, or Reset to start again. Press F for fullscreen, R to reset, and Escape to exit fullscreen.
When to use it
- Making a desktop wallpaper: choose a widescreen resolution such as 1920x1080 or 3840x2160 to fit a common display shape.
- Creating a phone background: pick the portrait 1080x1920 option for a tall composition.
- Preparing a square graphic background: select 1080x1080 for a square canvas.
- Trying out color combinations: adjust the Primary color and Gradient stops before downloading, rather than repeatedly editing exported files.
- Building a background with a sharp color boundary: place stops at the same position to make an intentional hard edge.
- Using a familiar starting point: choose Sea or Dusk as a Gradient preset and generate a variation from a seed.
- Adding a gradient to a web design: copy the base gradient CSS as a starting point for the background style.
Tips for better gradient backgrounds
Choose the output shape before refining the colors: a gradient that looks balanced in a wide preview may feel different in a portrait or square image. If you have a specific canvas size in mind, use Custom and enter its width and height.
| Choice | What it affects |
|---|---|
| Gradient angle (degrees) | Sets the direction of a linear gradient. |
| Gradient stops | Give you control over the colors and transitions in the blend; stops at the same position create a hard edge. |
| Image format | PNG, JPG, and WEBP are available. JPG and WEBP can alter pixel values. |
| Output resolution | Sets the dimensions of the downloaded image. 8K is device-dependent. |
The preview is only a small representation: the full image is generated when you select Download image. For a CSS implementation, remember that Copy base gradient CSS describes only the base gradient, not additional patterns, text, or shapes.
Limits to keep in mind
Gradient Background Generator creates a downloadable image, but it does not establish that the result will look identical on every display or in every browser. Canvas and CSS rendering can differ at edges, especially around hard stops. JPG and WEBP may also change pixel values, so choose PNG when preserving exact pixel values matters.
The maximum output is 33,177,600 pixels, and very large exports can depend on your device; 8K is not guaranteed to work on every device. If a large download is slow or fails, choose a smaller resolution or enter smaller custom dimensions. For color-critical work, check the exported image in the intended software and on the target display.
