This can help when you need a little light close by but do not have a separate lamp to hand. Set your device where the screen can illuminate the object or page, and choose a comfortable level before looking at it for a while.
How to use Screen Flashlight
- Open Screen Flashlight and choose Warm, Neutral, or Cool / white to set the screen's tone.
- Adjust Rendered intensity (%) in Options to make the displayed light more or less intense. The Approximate color temperature (K) and Primary color are also shown there.
- For a larger light surface, select Fullscreen. Select Exit fullscreen or press Escape to return to the page. If the controls are hidden, press Tab for dismissible exit controls.
- Select Keep screen awake if you want to request that the display stay on while using the light. It is optional and depends on browser support.
- Select Reset to return the light settings to their starting state. Use Exit to leave the tool, or Hide controls to remove the controls from view.
When to use it
- Reading a label or small print: Place the screen beside the item when room lighting makes text hard to see.
- Finding a nearby object: Use the lit display to look for something on a desk, shelf, or in a bag.
- Checking a keyhole or small area: Position the screen nearby to add light while you look, without relying on a camera flash.
- Lighting a page while reading: Try Warm or a lower Rendered intensity (%) if a bright white screen feels uncomfortable.
- Adding gentle light in a dark room: Choose a tone and intensity that feels comfortable for a short task.
- Keeping a display lit during a brief task: Select Keep screen awake when supported by your browser, so the screen is less likely to turn off during use.
Tips for comfortable use
Start with a lower Rendered intensity (%) and raise it only as needed. The screen's own brightness setting also affects how much light you see, and this tool does not change that device setting. Avoid staring directly at a bright display, especially in a dark room; angle it toward the object or surface you want to illuminate.
Warm, Neutral, and Cool / white offer different screen tones. A warmer tone may feel more comfortable for a short close-up task, while Cool / white can make a page or object easier for you to see. Try the available options and pick the one that works for the situation rather than assuming one setting is best for everyone.
Fullscreen gives the display more uninterrupted space for light. If you need access to the controls again after choosing Hide controls, press Tab to reveal dismissible exit controls. Use Escape to leave fullscreen.
Limits of Screen Flashlight
Screen Flashlight illuminates the display only; it does not activate a camera LED, control a physical backlight, or replace a dedicated flashlight. The amount of light depends on your display and its own brightness setting, so it may not be enough for a dark path, a large room, or work that needs strong, directed lighting.
The Keep screen awake option is user-initiated and browser-dependent. The tool has no flashing or strobe effect and does not ask for camera permission. Avoid prolonged exposure to a bright screen; for longer tasks, use a proper lamp and take breaks from looking at the display.
