The Fullscreen Reading Light can be useful on a laptop, tablet, or phone when you want a simple screen-based light nearby. Before starting, position the display where its glow is comfortable and decide whether you prefer a warm, neutral, or cool appearance.
How to use Fullscreen Reading Light
- Choose Warm, Neutral, or Cool / white to select the screen light’s approximate color temperature.
- Adjust Rendered intensity (%) to make the displayed light brighter or dimmer. The current setting is shown as a percentage.
- Use Approximate color temperature (K) and Primary color as labeled controls when adjusting the appearance. The displayed temperature is approximate.
- Select Fullscreen to expand the light across the display. If you want to leave the controls visible, use Hide controls to dismiss them.
- To return, press Escape or use Exit or Exit fullscreen when available. Press F to toggle fullscreen, or R to reset.
When to use it
- Reading in a dim room: Try the screen glow when a lamp is out of reach or would disturb someone nearby.
- Reading on a tablet or phone: Use the larger, solid screen area as a close-by light while viewing text on another page or device.
- Choosing a warmer screen tone: Select Warm if you prefer a less cool-looking glow for an evening reading session.
- Comparing light tones: Switch between Warm, Neutral, and Cool / white to find a screen appearance that feels comfortable to you.
- Finding small items nearby: Use the display as a nearby source of light while handling a book, notes, or other objects.
- Setting up a simple reading space: Open the fullscreen scene when you want the light to cover more of the display rather than sit among page controls.
- Trying a screen light before choosing a lamp: Get a sense of whether a broad, close screen glow suits your task, while remembering it is not a dedicated reading lamp.
Tips for a comfortable screen light
Start with a lower Rendered intensity (%) and raise it only as needed. A bright display can feel uncomfortable in a dark room, so adjust the setting to suit the surrounding light rather than automatically choosing the highest level.
Try the color choices while looking at the material you plan to read. Warm, Neutral, and Cool / white describe approximate screen tones, not measured lighting conditions. The Fullscreen Reading Light is most practical when the display is close enough to provide a useful glow without making you lean toward it.
If the page controls are in the way, use Hide controls; when you need them again, press Tab for dismissible exit controls. Keep the display angled to avoid glare and take breaks if your eyes feel strained.
Limits of Fullscreen Reading Light
This is rendered light on the display, not a control for the device’s physical backlight. Rendered intensity changes the pixels; it does not increase or decrease the hardware backlight. The color temperature is approximate, so this is not a calibrated lighting source.
A screen may be too small, directional, or dim for comfortable reading or illuminating a whole area. For sustained reading, a dedicated lamp is usually a better choice; use your device’s own brightness control if you need to change the display backlight. Avoid prolonged bright-screen exposure, especially when the light is close to your face.
